That time of year Sonnet no 73 – William Shakespeare long question answer

Mark – 6

() “That on the ashes of his youth doth lie.”- What lies on the ashes of its youth ? How does the poet philosophically describe its expiry ? 2+4

Ans – A fire which is burning dimly on the heap of the ashes of its youth lies inside the poet. Here the fire refers to the life force or the energy of the poet.

The poet suggests that the fire will choke itself in the ashes, that is the remaining burnt out logs that nourished the fire once. By stating this, the poet has commented that the fire will be finally consumed by the same energy that once nourished it. It was a popular philosophical belief in Shakespeare’s time that the nature played a dual role in nourishing at first and then the same force would initiate its destruction.

(২) Discuss the various images drawn by Shakespeare in Sonnet 73. (WBCHSE Model Question) ( Text Book Question )

Ans – In Sonnet 73 Shakespeare has drawn three images in the three quatrains of his poem. The first image is that of a nearly bare tree with yellow leaves in autumn. The poet has compared it with another image of a ruined and abandoned church and its choir. The second image portrays the twilight of a day. The sun is setting slowly in the West and soon everything will be wrapped in the darkness of the impending night. The third image is that of a fire which is burning dimly amid the mound of ashes. Soon the fire will die down. All the three images reveal the decay and ultimate destruction.

(৩) “In me thou see’st the twilight of such day / As after sunset fadeth in the West” – How does the poet use the image of sunset to convey the theme of aging ? Explain how this imagery connects to the overall message of the Sonnet. 3+3

Ans – All the three images presented in the poem convey the theme of aging and decay. In this line, the poet has indirectly compared his life-span with a day. He has reached the twilight of that day, a juncture of day and night. The sunlight is slowly fading in the western sky. Soon the black night will envelope everything. Metaphorically it suggests the decay of the old age and the ultimate death, which is suggested by the black night.

The overall message of the Sonnet is aging, mortality or transience of life and love. The imagery of the twilight, conveyed in the second quatrain, is quite befitting with the other two images like the bare tree in autumn and the dying fire. All these convey the image of senile decay and ultimate death.

(৪) “That time of year thou mayst in me behold/When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang”- Why does the poet mention “Yellow leaves, or none, or few” ? How does this imagery reflects the poet’s feeling about aging and life ? 3+3

Ans – The poet wants to portray the time of the year, namely, the autumn which is marked by the falling of leaves. Before final falling the leaves turn yellow from green and gradually all the leaves fall down making the tree completely bare. For achieving the accuracy in portrayal of this scene, the poet has mentioned words and expressions like ‘yellow leaves, or none, or few.’

The imagery conveys a scene of decay, degeneration and the final destruction. Old age is also marked with degeneration of our limbs and the inevitability of death. The poet seems to be a little sad about his aging but at the same time he has accepted this unstoppable decay as a part of the natural process.

() Bring out the significance of the title of the poem ‘ That time of year …. Sonnet No 73 ’ .  6

( ‘That time of year ….

Ans – Shakespeare has not given separate titles to any of his 154 Sonnets. They are identified with their serial of occurrence in Thomas Thorpe’s quarto edition published in 1609. Somehow these Sonnets have a kind of loose continuity like the Sonnet sequence. The present Sonnet is known as Sonnet 73.

Titleless poems are conventionally identified with their first lines and sometimes ‘That time of year thou mayst in me behold’ is used as its title. The initial phrase ‘time of year’ refers to the key imagery of the poem and the general theme of time-awareness as well. The word ‘thou’ suggests the beloved for whom the Sonnet is written and whom the poet invites to observe his aging state throughout the poem, so the first line can serve the title of the poem as well.

(৬) What are the three imageries presented in the Sonnet 73 ? What common message do they convey ? 4+2

Ans – The three quatrains of Sonnet 73 present three different imageries. In the first quatrain, we come across an autumnal scene. A tree is bereft of leaves. The few leaves that remain have turned yellow and are shaking against the cold wind. In the second quatrain, we see the twilight of a day. The sun is setting and soon black night will wrap everything in a lull of rest. In the third quatrain, we see a dim fire is burning on the heap of ashes and it will expire soon.

All the imageries reveal a picture of decay and the ultimate destruction. Metaphorically all of them convey the message of loss and decay from aging and the ultimate death.

(৭) What images according to the poet will be seen in him by his lover in Sonnet 73 ?  Why does the poet invite his lover to see the images ? 3+3

Ans – According to the poet, his lover will see three distinct images in him. At first, the lover will see the autumn of a year when a tree stands bare with a few yellow leaves. Secondly, the twilight of a day with the setting sun will be seen in him. Finally, the glow of a dying fire will also be visible in him.

All the images metaphorically suggest a scene of loss, decay and ultimate destruction. By presenting these images the poet wants to make his lover understand that he has turned old and like the destruction of all natural thing he will die soon. He also assures that this realisation will make the love of his beloved even more intense.

(৮) “Which by and by black night doth take away/Death’s second self that seals up all in rest” – What does ‘black night’ suggest in this poem ? What is referred to as ‘death’s second self’ and why ? How does it seal up all in rest ? 2+2+2

Ans – In Sonnet 73 the black night is described to take away gradually the twilight of a day and it seals up all in rest. Metaphorically the black night refers to death which provides eternal sleep for everyone.

The expression refers to sleep which provides rest to everyone at night. Sleep is called death’s second self since sleep also provides rest for everyone like death which is the other name of eternal rest.

As the darkness of night envelopes the world, people stop their activities and retire to bed for sleep and rest to wake up in the next day break with renewed energy. In this way, the black night seals up all in rest.

(৯) Estimate Sonnet 73 as a love poem. 6

Ans – All the Sonnets of Shakespeare are basically love poems with an undertone of many other things like beauty, time, mutability, death and reflections on art, philosophy and others. Sonnet 73 is not an exception. From the very beginning we find that the poet is addressing someone and inviting the person’s attention towards him. He urges the person to see some scenes of natural decay in himself revealing his aging condition. This invitation to see and perceive his condition has a purpose. In the couplet, he argues that the person should love him more as his days are numbered and the lover would lose him for ever before long. In this way it is a unique love poem in which an aged lover urges his seemingly younger beloved to love him more .

(০) “This thou perceiv’st thy love more strong”- What is the person addressed as ‘thou’ expected to perceive ? How does the person perceive it? What will be effect of this perception ? 1+3+2

Ans – The person addressed as ‘thou’ in the poem is the poet’s lover and the poet expects him or her to perceive the senility and the imminent death of the poet.

The poet expects that if his lover looks closely to him he or she will cetainly see some picture of natural decay and destruction like the losing of leaves by a tree in autumn or the fading of a twilight in him. In other words, the person would perceive about his aging condition and related changes.

The poet expects that if his lover happens to understand his condition, he or she will love him more. It is because he or she would like to utilize the short span of time more intently before the poet’s death.

(১) What are the two time-related imageries presented by Shakespeare in Sonnet 73 ? Why did the poet choose these imageries for the poem ? 3+3

Ans – Among the three imageries presented in the poem, two are distinctly time-related. The first is the season-related imagery of a tree in autumn. The second is the imagery which is related to the twilight of a day, which will disappear with the advent of the night.

Shakespeare has chosen the two-related imageries in his Sonnet because he wants his lover to perceive the changes brought by time on every natural object. These changes culminate in the ultimate disappearance and death of everything. Through this he hints at his own aging and mortality.

(২) “Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang”- What is compared as ‘bare ruined choir’ ? How does this comparison match with the overall tone of the Sonnet ? 2+4

Ans – The autumnal tree with yellow leaves or bare leafless branches are compared with the deserted and ruined church and its lost choirs.

The poem presents a series of imageries that reveals decay and loss. We come across the picture of a tree that has lost its leaves and those few that remain, have turned yellow. This picture matches rightly with the ruin of a church where once the choir used to sing In praise of God. Similarly, the bare tree in autumn was visited by the song-birds. Along with this, the other two imageries like the fading twilight and dying fire match with the tone of aging and the imminent death.
