(১) What events will supposedly take place according to the poet in the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’ ? 6 *****

( WBCHSE Model Question )

Ans –

✍ In the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’, the poet has presented a number of events that will supposedly take place for global warming. The grain belts will shift to the polar region and the agricultural lands will turn into dust bowls. For this countries like Greenland and Antarctica will emerge as new powers. The face of the cities will change as suburbs will turn into farms and the nut trees will replace trees like oak or elm. People will be poorer and will not be able to afford cars. The public buildings will have to be maintained by common people as governments will be unable to do so. New economic powers will emerge but their success will be short-lived. People will be as neglectful of environmental issues as they are now.

(২) What future picture of the city is drawn by the poet in ‘The Greenhouse Effect’ ? What activities will be seen in the sea and why ? 3 + 3 *****

Ans –

✍ The future picture of the city as drawn by the poet is quite different from the cities as they are now. The suburb of the cities will turn into farmlands. The streets of the cities will be lined with nut trees in place of oaks or elms. People will be poorer and walk to their workplaces and vegetables will be grown in the lawns of the houses.

✍ In the sea the far-flung fleets of Korea will be seen. For climate change, the Koreans will gain economically and their ships will patrol the sea with their cheap goods all over the world. People of countries like America will see the lights of their ships from the beach and think that the success of Korea will be temporary.

(৩) Justify the title of the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’.  6 *****

Ans –

✍ In this poem, the poet has drawn some horrible pictures of the earth in the near future. The agricultural activities will be hampered as lands will be turned in dust bowls. There will be many power-shifts in geopolitical and economic sectors. All these will happen for the gradual rise in the temperature of the earth’s atmosphere. The temperature rise will be the effect of increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere of the earth. In other words, the future misery of the world will be the effect of greenhouse gases. In this way the title, ‘The Greenhouse Effect’ directly points out to the central theme of the poem and is totally appropriate.

(৪) Describe the Central idea of the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’.  6 **

Ans –

✍ In the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’, the poet predicts that the global warming will go on. The poem presents a grim picture of global warming in the days to come. The pictures presented are all futuristic. The climate change from greenhouse effect will alter not only our physical environment but will also affect our social, economic and political situations. It will bring poverty, misery and destruction of our civilisation as the ancient civilisations like those of Rome or Carthage underwent in the past.

(৫) What changes about agricultural activities and plant-world are predicted in the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’ ? Why, according to the poet, should there be such changes ? 4+2 ***

Ans –

✍ In the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’, the poet predicts that the global warming will go on. In the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’, the poet predicts that the global warming will go on. As a result of this, the grain-producing areas of present time will lose its top-soil and will turn into huge bowls of dust. The grain producing areas will shift to cooler places like Greenland and Antarctica. Agricultural lands will be rare to find and people will start growing crops and vegetables suburbs and the lawns of their houses. The decorative trees like oak or elm will be replaced by food-producing nut-trees.

(৬) How does the poet refer to both future and past in the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’ ?  6 **

Ans –

✍ In the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’, the poet has presented the readers pictures of grim future. As a result of the climate change there will be geographical shift in agricultural and crop-producing areas. The life of the people will be poverty-stricken. They will have to walk to their place of work. Along with these futuristic pictures the poet has also mentioned the past civilisations like those of Rome and Carthage. He has told about the total destruction of the ancient Roman civilisation. At the same time he has alluded to future trading nations as the ancient Carthage which developed as a trading empire in the remote past.

(৭) “The suburbs will give way to farms”- Why will suburbs give way to farms ? What will be the effect of such change on the economic condition of the people ? 3+3 ***

Ans –

✍ The suburbs will give way to farms as it will be difficult to find good tillable lands. As a result of the climate change the top layers of agricultural lands will turn into dust and unsuitable for agriculture. People will desperately try to grow crops and vegetables in the suburbs of the city.

✍ The climate change will affect the common people economically. They will be much poorer than they are now. The poet predicts that they will not be able to afford cars in the future. Consequently, they will have to walk to their workplaces. As a result of this poverty, they will have to grow vegetables in the front lawns of their house instead of growing flowers and decorative plants.

(৮) “We’ll move down streets lined with practical nut trees”- Why are the nut trees called practical ? What trees will the nut trees replace and why ? What changes will be observed in the front lawns of the city ? 2+2+2 ****

Ans –

✍ The nut trees are called practical because they produce nuts which can be consumed. These trees are not merely decorative like oak and elm trees.

✍ The poet predicts that in the post-climate-change period, the nut trees will replace oaks and elms which now usually line the streets in a city. This will happen because of the food-scarcity. People will prefer food-producing trees like nut trees.

✍ Usually at present we see that in the front lawns of a city-houses, flowers and other decorative plants are grown. But the poet predicts that after the climate change vegetables will be grown there.

(৯) “And the grain belts begin to slide closer to the poles” –  What is meant by ‘grain belts’ ? Why will grain belts slide to the poles ? What will happen to the previous grain belts ? ***

Ans –

✍ ‘Grain belts’ means the area or region of a country that produces the major quantity of food-grains for the population of a country.

✍ The grain belts will slide to the poles because of the gradual and continuous warming of the earth’s atmosphere. This will be caused by the increase of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour, which trap the sun’s heat.

✍ The top soil of the previous agricultural land will turn into fine dust, which will not be suitable for cultivation. As a result of this, these lands will be abandoned as dust bowls or arid deserts.

What do you mean by the expression ‘Korean armada’ ? Where will the Korean armada be seen and how will people react to it ? 2+4

Ans –

✍ The word ‘armada’ means the naval fleet like the Spanish armada of the past. But here ‘Korean armada’ suggests the trading ships of Korea, that, according to the poet, will dominate the business world in future.

✍ The Korean armada will be seen in the sea. Their far-flung fleets of ships will be seen by the people from the beach. These ships will be engaged in their world-wide business venture relentlessly. By seeing the lights of these ships, people will talk among themselves that their success will be short-lived. This will happen due to climate change but the people will be as indifferent to such changes as before.

Greenland and Antarctica will join the new Great Powers” – What is meant by ‘Great Powers’ ? How will Greenland and Antarctica be new Great Powers ? 2+4 **

Ans –

✍ The expression ‘Great Powers’ means the nations, who are economically, politically and military-wise powerful to exert influence on most other nations .

✍ As a result of global warming, the existing grain-producing lands will turn arid and incapable of producing grain any longer. The agricultural areas will then shift to cooler areas like Green-land and Antarctica. As these regions will be the new areas of grain production, it will gradually be the hub of economic activity. After being economically prosperous, these countries will emerge as great powers in course of time.

What are the two major visual imageries presented in the poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’ ?  6 ***

Ans –

✍ The two major imageries presented in the poem are the cityscape and the seascape of post-climate-change period. The poet has drawn a detailed picture of the future city. The outskirts of those cities are changed into farms. The city streets are not lined with elms or oaks but with rows of nut trees. The front lawns of the houses are crowded with vegetables. The people are poor and they go their work on foot or in crowded trollies. Public houses will be maintained by common folks. Then we get the imagery of the sea with lighted ships of Korean trading fleet sailing day and night. The people on the beach are swaying their bodies in the tune of the local beach band.

What are the historical references made in the poem ‘The Greenhouse effect’ ? Why does the poet make such references ? 4+2

Ans –

✍ The poem ‘The Greenhouse Effect’ depicts the future of the post-climate-change period. But, poet has also presented the historical references when he mentions about ancient Rome’s ruined temples and forum which have been the grazing ground of sheep for thousand years. Again he has referred to history when he mentions the historical trading hub and empire of Carthage in Africa. The word ‘armada’ also reminds us of historical Spanish armada.

✍ The poet probably has made such references to remind us that even the powerful historical civilisations like Rome or Carthage had been destroyed for their mistakes and indifference.

We’ll say to ourselves as we begin to sway / To the strains of our native beach band”- When will we be prompted to say ? What will we say ? What will we ignore as we say this ? 2+2+2

Ans –

✍ According to the poet, we will be prompted to say when we will see the lights of Korean fleets sailing by the sea in their world-wide patrol for business and trading.

✍ The poet predicts that the people will be indifferent to the rise of new power like Korea and they will say to one another that their success would be temporary and they will disappear soon.

✍ The people, who will say this to one another, will be dancing in the tune of their native beach band and will ignore the hits or important messages to be broadcasted from the Arctic radio on environment issues.
