The Ghost Brahman Question Answer (5 Mark)
(1) How did the neat-herd king solve the case of the Brahmin ?
[ কীভাবে রাখাল-রাজা ব্রাহ্মণের মামলাটি সমাধান করেছিলেন ? ] 5
Answer –
✍ The Brahman has been dispossessed of his house, his mother and his wife. A ghostly Brahman has driven him away. He meets the king of the land who practically does nothing,but suspends the case. The Brahman Is now in deep trouble; At this crucial juncture, the neat-herd king intervenes. He summons both Brahmans to his court of justice. He challenges them to enter a narrow-necked bottle. He declares that the winner will be the rightful owner of all that is demanded. The real Brahman fails; the ghost Brahman ends up being bottled up. The sea does the rest by devouring the bottle. Thus the neat-herd king representing people’s court, delivers justice. He applies his unconventional system of justice to solve the Brahman’s case. It also highlights that justice may be delayed but not denied.
(2) Who is the neatherd king? What role does he play in the story “The Ghost Brahman” ?

Answer –
✍ In the story “The Ghost Brahman” the neatherd king is the leader of cow-boys. He plays the role of a king in their game.
✍ The neatherd is an interesting character in the story. He is elected king by other cowboys. They play at the royalty. The neatherd king plays an important role to bring climax in the story. Here the neatherd plays, the role of the ideal king in contast with the king of the state. He has all the qualities of the king. The Brahman appeals to the king to help him. But the king does nothing to punish the ghost. The neat-herd is an intelligent cowboy. He locks the imposter in a phial with the help of his common sense. He is like a knight helps the poor Brahman and his family to rescue from the clutches of the ghost. Through the activities of the neatherd king, Lal Behari Day mocks at the stupidity of the legal system of that time. The neat-herd king has no power of the state and royalty. But he helps the poor Brahman with his power of knowledge and practical wisdom. He represents the good and in the folktale he defeats the force of evil. He is very kind and helpful. The sufferings of the poor Brahman easily touch him. The Brahman can not able to take possession of his wife, mother and house without the help of the neatherd king.
(3) “I’ll decide the case at once” – Who said this line ? How he decided the case at once ?
[“আমি এখনই বিষয়টা মীমাংসা করব” – কে এই লাইনটা বলেছিল ? সে কিভাবে বিষয়টির মীমাংসা করেছিল ?] (1+4)
Answer –
✍ In the story ‘The Ghost Brahman’ the line was spoken by the neatherd king.
✍ The poor Brahman pleaded the king to help him. The king failed to do the justice. The neatherd king came to know the sad-story of the Brahman from him. He decided to solve the Brahman’s case if the King of the state permitted him to do so.
✍ On the day of judgement both the Brahman and the Ghost-Brahman appeared in front of the neat-herd. The neatherd said that it would be proven who the real Brahman was if he could get into the phial that the neat herd had brought with him. The ghost-Brahman made himself into a small creature like an insect and entered into the phial. The neatherd king at once corked up the phial and the ghost could not get out. Thus the neatherd king decided the case at once with help of his practical wisdom. Being confused the king of the state did not able to help the poor Brahman. But the neatherd king like the real king came forward to help the Brahman and defeated the ghost.
(4) “He begged from door to door”- Who is referred to here as ‘he’ ? Why did he beg from door to door ? What happened after this ?
[“সে দরজায় দরজায় ভিক্ষা করছিল”- ‘সে’ বলতে কাকে বোঝানো হয়েছে ? কেন সে দরজায় দরজায় ভিক্ষা করেছিল ? এর পরে কি ঘটেছিল ?] (1+2+2)
Answer –
✍ Here ‘he’ is referred to the poor Brahman in the focktale ‘The Ghost Brahman’.
✍ The Brahman was very poor and he was not a Kulin Brahman. He had not enough money for his marriage. So he begged from door to door of rich people to collect money for his marriage, The money was needed for giving to the parents of the bride.
✍ The poor Brahman begged from door to door for money. He flattered many rich folk to collect money. At last he became successful to gather the sum needed for his marriage. So the wedding of the Brahman took place in due time and he brought home his wife.
(5) What does the Brahman experience on return to his house ? How does it affect him ?
[বাড়ি ফিরে আসার পর ব্রাহ্মণ কী অভিজ্ঞতা লাভকরেন ? সেটি তাকে কীভাবে প্রভাবিত করে ?] (3+2)
Answer –
✍ Leaving his house, mother and wife, the Brahman went to distant lands to earn money. Some years after, he returned to his house. But he was shocked and surprised to see a person exactly like him had occupied all his possessions. He was simply confused and did not know what to do. However, he started a heated altercation with the occupant of his house. But the ghost had already established his influence in the family. As a result, he drove away the real master of the house. The Brahman found no support for him from any quarter. He left his own house in utter despair and grief.
✍ The Brahman, finding no place in his own house took his case to the king for justice. On hearing him, the king summoned both the ghost-brahman and his antagonist to his court. However, the king himself got puzzled and could not judge fairly. The real Brahman was at stake. He had no alternative but to lament and cry over his legal rights.
(6) How did the Brahman’s decision to leave his family affect him adversely ?

Answer –
✍ The Brahman was forced to leave his house, leaving his old mother and newly-married wife lone. His motif was to earn money to make his family happy and prosperous. But he had to suffer terribly for this decision. As soon as he departed, a ghost in his disguise appeared and became the owner of the Brahman’s house, including his mother and his wife. He was above suspicion as he looked exactly like the real Brahman. Gradually he established his fake identity. He went so far as he drove the real Brahman from his own house when he came back home and claimed his all. The unlucky Brahman had to go to the King’s court for justice and was harassed much. Thus the Brahman’s decision to leave his house adversely affected his life.
(7) Why was it very much difficult for the Brahman to marry ? How did he solve his problem ?

Answer –
✍ The Brahman of the story “The Ghost-brahman” was very poor. Besides, he was not a Kulin or class one Brahman. He could neither boast of his pedigree nor meet the expenses of wedding. Naturally, he found it very difficult to marry. He was determined to marry. He thought he would collect money by any means. He begged of the wealthy persons for money. He flattered them much to fulfil his mission. Even he went from door to door asking for money. Anyway, the Brahman was able to collect money needed for the dowry and expenses during the marriage.
(7) Why did the Brahman migrate to distant lands ? What did he tell his mother before his departure ?

Answer –
✍ Soon after his marriage, the Brahman found that he had not much money left to maintain his family. He knew it would pose a serious problem to him. Therefore, he decided to travel distant lands to earn money.
✍ Before his departure, the Brahman explained to his old mother the reason of his leaving the house. The Brahman also told his mother that he would have to stay many years away. For, he needed much money which he would earn by all means. Anyway, feeling concerned about his newly-married wife, he told her that he would give her the money he had. He requested his mother to make the most of the money and look after his newly-married wife in his possibly long absence. As a responsible son and husband, the Brahman set out in pursuit of prosperity and happiness for his family.
(8) What prompted the Brahman to seek justice from the king ? What was the outcome of his enterprise ?

Answer –
✍ On return after years of absence from his house, the Brahman was confused to see his likeness in his house. The occupant drove him out of the house, claiming the Brahman’s mother and wife as his sole property. Thoroughly upset, the Brahman went to the king to seek justice. He hoped that the king would definitely dissolve the dispute. The king heard his plea patiently, no doubt, and summoned both to his court. But he was at his wit’s end to differentiate one from the other. So he took time to think over the issue to deliver his verdict.
✍ The victim of deception, however, did not give up. He visited the king’s court daily with the hope of getting justice. But the king told him every day to come the following day. As a result, the Brahman became more and more hopeless day by day. He was so disgusted with the king that he suspected about the king’s potential as a judge.
(9) Who entered the Brahman’s house after his departure and in what form ? How did the intruder become the master of the house ?

Answer –
✍ A ghost entered the Brahman’s house immediately after his departure. The ghost came in perfect disguise of the Brahman.
✍ The ghost took the appearance of the Brahman and his manners. So it was impossible for the old mother of the real Brahman to suspect his identity. Only the wife of the Brahman felt surprised at his sudden change of decision. But the ghost satisfied her with his ingenious explanation. All problems resolved at home, the ghost gained the trust of all neighbours. The ghost took advantage of the poor Brahman’s family and soon established himself as the real owner of the house. Even the arrival of the real Brahman could not change his position. For, he was able to drive him away from his own house calling him fake.
