(1) How did the elder prince meet the Rakshashi ? What happened to him ? (2+3)

Answer –

After the elder prince came in the forest with the medicant, one day he trailed a stag which he wounded and went inside the forest to the north. There he found a fine-looking house where he met the Rakshasi in disguise of a beautiful young woman.

The lady invited the prince to play a game of dice which he gladly accepted. The prince lost in the first round of the game and lost his young hawk. In the second round, he was defeated again and lost his puppy. In the third and final game he had to give himself up to the lady as he had nothing else to bet on. In this way, the prince was made captive by the Rakshasi.

(2) What did the elder prince hear about the mendicant from the Rakshasi ? What did he do then ? (2+3)

Answer –

The younger prince saved his brother’s life by defeating the Rakshasi. In return of her life, the Rakshasi divulged that the monk had already offered six human lives on the alter of goddess Kali in the nearby temple. Now the elder prince would be the monk’s next target. By sacrificing him he would gain perfection in his devotion to Goddess Kali.

The elder prince at once set out for the temple, followed by his brother. As soon as he entered the temple, he found many human skulls lying scattered in the dark niches of the temple. On seeing the prince, the skulls started laughing terribly. The prince was shocked and scared. However, the skulls were amused to tell him that they would be happy to have his skull beside them soon. The skulls then assured the prince that there was only one way out. They advised them to kill the monk by outwitting him. Together they set the plan of killing the monk and reviving the skulls back to life.

(3) What did the elder prince do before leaving his father’s house and with whom did he go and to where ? What duties did the mendicant give to the prince and what was he warned of ? (3+2)

Answer –

Before leaving the king’s palace the elder prince planted a tree in the courtyard. The prince told his family that the green leaves of the tree would tell them that he was all right. However, if the tree lost its colour and would start fading, that would mean he was unwell and if the whole tree faded he would be on the verge of death.

The prince went to the forest with the mendicant and lived in a hut thatched with leaves.

He was tasked to picking flowers every day for the monk’s offerings to gods.

The mendicant warned the prince not to go to the north for evil would overpower him.

(4) How did the mendicant who wished to be perfect play his role to both the princes ? How did the younger brother save the elder one ? (3+2)

Answer –

The mendicant monk took away the elder prince with him to his cottage. He was brought to be sacrificed as the last offering to Goddess Kali for the completion of his devotions. So he was dominant over the elder prince all the time. However, after the elder prince had been trapped by the enchantress, the monk was in trouble. Now he found the younger prince in his cottage. He was glad to see him as an alternative to the elder prince. So he was not rude to him.

The younger brother heard the story of the enchantress. He was eager to meet her. A chance led him to reach her house. He played a game of dice with the lady who was really a Rakhashi. However, he won all three games and got back his elder brother alive.

(5) Find out the importance of the six skulls to bring the climax of the story ‘The Man Who Wished to be Perfect’.

Answer –

At the end of the story ‘The Man Who Wished to belPerfect’, the six skulls plays an important role to bring the climax and constitute the supernatural atmosphere of horror in the story. In this folktale they act like a chorus to express the truth behind the mendicant’s appearance. They are talking like human. Actually they were the skulls of the six victims sacrificed by the mendicant to the Goddess before the elder prince. When the elder prince entered in the temple, they laughed loudly. One of the skulls informed the prince that the mendicant would sacrifice him like them to become perfect when his devotions might be completed. He also helped the prince to kill the mendiacant in the temple with simple trick. At last the skulls were united to their respective bodies and became living men when the mendicant was sacrificed at the altar of the Kali by the elder prince. Thus in this folk-tale the skulls play a pivotal role to punish the mendicant for his vices. They also enrich the supernatural element of the folktale.

(6) “But I will give the medicine on this condi-tion”- Who is to referred to as ‘I’ in this line ? What is the condition ? Bring out the signifi-cance of the line. (1+2+2)

In the story ‘The Man Who Wished to be perfect’ the word ‘I’ referred to the mendicant who came to the king.

Once a king was very anxious because he had no issue. One day a mendicant came to him and wanted to help the king to have twin sons. He told the king that the queen can give birth twins sons by swallowing a medicine given by him. But he gave one condition to give one of the sons to him. The condition was very hard for the king to accept. But being very anxious to have sons he accepted the condition of the mendicant.

In this story the condition plays an imporant part to constitute the main plot. With this condition the mendicant wanted to fulfil his personal desire. Actually the claimed the prince to sacrifice him to the goddess Kali to become perfect. So the condition demanded by the mendicant for his help-sketches the future course of the story.

(7) “The Prince gladly agreed to the proposal’- Who was the prince ? Whose proposal is referred to here ? What happened after accepting the proposal ? (1+2+2)

Here the Prince was the elder prince who went to forest with a mendicant in the story ‘The Man Who Wished to be Perfect’.

According to the demand of the mendicant, elder prince went to the forest with him. One day he went to the north of the forest not thinking of mendicant’s warnings. There the prince saw a beautiful woman in a house with a dice table set before her. She proposed the prince to play a game of dice with her. Actually she was a Rakshasi in the appearance of beautiful lady. The woman’s proposal is referred to here.

The prince gladly accepted the proposal of the beautiful woman. The lady won the first game. So as per the condition of the game she took the young hawk accompanied with the prince. Then the prince played for the second time. The woman then took the puppy from the prince. The prince offered to play a third time and the wager was that, if the prince lost the game, he should give himself to the lady. The prince lost the game for the third time. She caught the prince and put him in a hole covered with a plank. The beautiful lady was a Rakshasi who lived upon human flesh. She reserved the prince for the meal of the next day.

(8) “The younger prince forthwith went towards the north” – Why did the younger prince go towards the north ? What did he see there ? (3+2)

Answer –

In the story ‘The Man Who Wished to be Perfect’ the younger prince came to know from the plant that the elder prince was in grave danger. So he decided to go to the forest to help his elder brother. So he choose the fastest horse and galloped towards the forest. In the forest he found the hut of the mendicant and in the evening he met with the mendicant. The mendicant told him that inspite of his warnings elder prince went to the north and he might be fallen into the toils of a Rakahasi. The mendicant also told that there was no hope of rescuing the elder prince because she had eaten him. Hearing this from the mendicant younger prince went to the north at once to save the life of his elder brother as soon as possible.thes

To the north the younger prince saw a stag pierced with an arrow. The younger prince followed the running stag and he reached to a house where he saw a woman of exquisite beauty. He understood that the woman was a Rakshasi in the appearance of the lady. He also concluded that the woman captivated his brother. The lady proposed him to play a game of dice with her. The younger prince accepted her proposal immediately.

(9) “Don’t kill me, and I will tell you a secret”- Who is the speaker ? To whom it is spoken ? What is the secret referred to here ? (1+1+3)

In the story ‘The Man Who Wished to be Perfect’ a Rakshasi told this remark.

She told this to the younger prince who wanted to kill her.

The younger prince won the game of dice with the Rakshasi for the third time and he wanted to kill the Rakshasi as she captivated his elder brother to eat. The Rakshasi then requested him not to kill her and she would tell him a secret that might save the lift of the elder prince. She informed that the mendicant was a worshipper of the goddess Kali and he wanted to sacrifice elder prince to become perfect. The mendicant had already Sacrified six human victims to the goddess for the purpose and he would become perfect of the seventh victim was sacrificed. The Rakshasi then told the prince to go immediately to the temple to see the truth. Thus the Rakshasi expressed the secret of the mendicant to the princess.

(10) “Please show me the way first and I’will gladly do it”- Who said this to whom ? Why did he say this ? What did he do then ? (1+1+2+1)

Answer –

In the story ‘The Man Who Wished To be Perfect’ the line is said by the elder prince to the mendicant in the temple”

One of the skulls in the temple disclosed the secret of the mendicant to the prince. The skull told the prince that the mendicant wanted to sacrifice him to the goddess when his devotions might be completed. In the temple the mendicant would tell him to prostrate before Mother Kali and while he did so, the mendicant would cut off his head. So the skull directed the elder prince to tell the mendicant that he did not know how to prostrate and he must do it when he showed it to him. When the mendicant prostrated before the altar, he might separate his head from body. So the elder prince requested the mendicant to show him way of prostration first and then he would do it gladly.

After hearing this request from the prince the mendicant prostrated before the goddess Kali himself and while he was doing so the prince at once cut off his head from his body with one stroke of his sword. Thus the prince killed the mendicant in the temple and his desire to become perfect remained unfulfilled.

(11) Who is the mendicant ? What role does he play in the story ‘The Man Who Wished to be Perfect’ ? (2+3)

Answer –

In the story ‘The Man Who Wished to be Perfect’. The mendicant was a worshipper of Goddess Kali who wanted to become perfect by sacrificing human life to the altar.

The mendicant demanded one of the two sons as return for his help. The condition was very hard to accept but the king being anxious to have a son accepted the demand of the mendicant. The mendicant returned to the palace when the princes were sixteen years old. The hearts of the king and the queen plunged into a sea of grief. The elder prince decided to go with the mendicant to the forest. The mendicant took the elder prince with him to sacrifice after complition of his devotion. The mendicant was the worshipper of Kali and he had already sacrificed six innocent human before the elder prince for his evil desire. The elder prince would be the seventh victim of the mendicant. In a society, a religious mendicant should help for something good but in contrast the mendicant helped the king for his personal benefit. The younger prince went to the forest to help his elder brother and found the secret of the mendicant from the Rakshasi. The elder prince killed the mendicant with the help of skulls who guided him how to separate mendicant’s wish to become perfect remains incomplete. Being a human he could not understand that no one would become perfect in this world. For the purpose he took wrong way of sacrificing human life to the goddess. So he was punished at the end for his unscrupulous work.
