(১) Justify the title of the poem ‘Hawk Roosting’.  6 *****

Ans In this poem, we come across a roosting hawk on the top of the wood. His eyes are closed and his body is restful. But all these we come to know from his own speeches. As the poem progresses we know about his physical capabilities, his behaviour, perspective towards nature and his advantages and conveniences. In other words, the entire poem is a monologue, that takes us into the mind of hawk. The poet intends to acquaint us with the mindset of a predatorial bird, a unique creation of nature. This journey into the mind of the hawk is possible, only when it is roosting. In consideration of that the title is quite appropriate and befitting.

(২) Describe the central theme / Substance of the poem ‘Hawk Roosting’  ?  6 *****

Ans –  ‘Hawk Roosting’ is a unique poem in which we make Journey into the mind of the hawk and listen to him speaking in the voice of a human being. Through this poem the poet wants to convey a message on the mindset of a predator. Nature has created the hawk as a predator, a bird belonging to the top order of the food chain. The body and the mindset of the hawk are created by nature in such a way that it can be a perfect killer of other animals. There is no question of morality or ethics in his manners and behaviour. This mindset of the hawk constitutes the Central theme of the poem ‘Hawk Roosting’ .

(৩) What are the activities of hawk in the roosting condition ? How does he describe his activities in flight ? 3+3 ***

Ans – When the hawk is roosting in the top of the wood, we find his eyes closed. But he assures that it is only inaction and he does not lose itself in idle day daydreaming. Even in his dream he rehearses the perfect killing of its prey and eating the flesh of hunted animals with the help of his hooked beak and sharp talons.

Sometimes after its passive roosting, the hawk takes a flight high up in the sky and begins to rotate slowly. This slow movement is to observe the movement of his prey on the ground below. Once he detects the victim, he comes down in lightning speed into the bone of that living animal and kills it violently by tearing off its head.

(৪) How does the different body parts of the hawk help him in his activities ? What natural elements are helpful to him ?  3+3 ***

Ans – The features of the hawk have been designed by nature to facilitate his hunting and killing. He has hooked beak to tear off flesh of the victim. His sharp hooked talons are meant for grasping the prey in a deathly grip. Moreover, he has perfectly designed feathers and wings to help in flight and a very sharp eyesight to detect the prey.

Apart from his unique body-parts the natural elements also help him in his activity of perfect hunting. The hight trees allow a perfect view of his hunting round. The air helps him to float and the sun’s rays enhance his vision in detecting the prey.

() What pictures of violence and fierceness are drawn in the poem ‘Hawk Roosting’?  6

Ans – Ted Hughes’ poems often contain pictures of violence and death. In ‘Hawk Roosting’, the poet has portrayed the hawk as a perfect killing machine. He is created by nature to cause violent deaths. With its hooked beak and sharp hooked talons he tears off heads of other animals wherever he likes. His slow revolving high up in the sky is only to swoop down into the bones of living beings and causing violent death. Even when he is roosting with his eyes closed, he only rehearses perfect and violent killing. In this way ruthless and violent pictures are presented in the poem.

(৬) “The convenience of the high trees”- Why are the high trees convenient to the speaker ? What other advantages does he get from nature ? 3+3 **

Ans – The speaker here is the hawk who is roosting on the top of the wood. The hawk means to say that the high trees are convenient to him because it gives him a clear view of the wide area on the ground below. In this ground he marks the movement of the animals which he can hunt.

Apart from the convenience of the high trees natural elements like the air and the sunlight are advantageous to the hawk. The air with its buoyancy helps him to fly and float in the sky. The rays of the sun help him to watch the movement of his preys .

() “There is no sophistry in my body”- What does ‘Sophistry’ mean and for what purpose is it used ? What does the hawk suggest about himself by this line ? 2 + 4

Ans – The word ‘Sophistry’ means use of clever but false arguments. They are used especially with the intention of deceiving others.

In this line the hawk suggests to say that his appearance is not at all deceptive. His hooked head, hooked feet and streamlined feathers to not give any false impression about its intention. It is clear that his features have been created to kill other animals efficiently. In his own words his manner consists in tearing off the head of others and his flight is meant for coming down directly into the bones of the living and to cause death.

() “The sun is behind me”- What does this statement reveal about the hawk ? How is the sun advantageous to the hawk ?  4+2

Ans – The statement reveals that the hawk is roosted in a position where the sun is just behind its back. The light source being at his back, it does not dazzle his eyes and helps him to detect the prey more clearly and perfectly. One again the sun behind him creates an aura all around the hawk and highlights his majesticity and power. The sun is the reason behind the creation of every living being on earth. The statement may also refer to the sun’s silent indulgence in creating a perfect prodator like the hawk.

The sun as a natural element is advantageous to the hawk as it provides the hawk enough light to enhance his visibility and helps to detect his prey on the ground.

(৯) “I am going to keep things like this” – What ‘things’ are referred to here by the speaker ? What arguments does he present in support of his promise ?  3+3 ***

Ans – In the very last line of the poem the hawk utters this sentence. By ‘things’ the hawk wants to mean the predatory activities of himself. He has been meticulously designed by nature as a predator, who, with its special physical features like hooked beak ahd sharp talons is efficient in tearing off the heads and breaking the bones of the living animals. The hawk is going to keep on these activities unchanged.

The hawk does not need any argument to assert his right of killing other animals. He confidently declares that nothing has changed in his body or in the environment since he has started killing his victims. He thinks that his powerful and keen eyesight is primarily responsible for this unchangeability.

Ans In the poem ‘Hawk Roosting’ the hawk speaks to himself. The poet has used the first person narrative or interior or inner monologue as a poetic device to take his readers into the mental world of the hawk. The poet has given a voice to the hawk with a purpose. The voice opens up the duality that exists In nature to the readers. The nature is the creator of life and beauty. But at the same time it is also the creator of violence and death. There is no moral or ethical value attached to the killing and violence in the world of the hawk as it is in the world of humans. The monologue pattern allows it to establish this truth about nature quite convincingly and makes it a memorable poem.

How does creation help in framing the body of the hawk ? What attitude is expressed by the hawk towards the creation  ? 3+3 ***

Ans – Nature has created the hawk as a bird of prey. According to the hawk, the whole of creation was needed to produce the perfection of his foot as a lethal tool for clutching its prey. Again each feather of his body Is designed meticulously enabling him to swoop down on the prey to kill it.

Nature has built the hawk as a perfect predator with its hooked beak, sharp talons, keen vision and powerful wings. Now, as a perfect killing machine he claims that he keeps the creation in his feet. In other words with his features given by nature, he dominates over the living world by killing the animals wherever he pleases.

How does the poet portray a word picture of the hawk and its surroundings in the poem ‘Hawk Roosting’ ?  6

Ans – Through the narrative of the hawk we get a picture of not only the bird but of the surroundings as well. We can see the bird sitting on the top of the wood with his eyes closed. His feet are locked into the rough bark of the branch. Then the hawk tells about his flying up in the air and revolving slowly in the sky. In this way we get a vivid picture of the hawk in its surrounding. At the same time in the first person narrative we get a picture of the physical features of the hawk, his hooked head and hooked feet and his perfect feathers. The languages used by the poet as the monologue of the hawk is very terse and forceful and that perfectly matches with the dominating nature of the hawk.

Comment on the physical features and prowess of the hawk . Discuss their Significance . ( WBCHSE Model Question ) ( Text Book Question )  6 **

Ans – The hawk is a bird of prey . Nature has endowed him with physical features to make it a perfect killing machine. Firstly, his hooked beak and hooked talons are efficient tools to hunt animals. Again his wings and each feather in it are designed to enable it on swooping down on its prey. Finally, his keen eyesight helps it to detect the movement of his prey on the ground. His prowess is expressed by his claim that his manner is to tear off the head of his victim. He again asserts that his flight directly comes down on the bones of the living creatures.

(১৪) “It took the whole of Creation / To produce my foot, my each feather / Now I hold Creation in my foot.” – What does the hawk mean by saying that ‘the whole of Creation’ produced it ? How does this statement reflect the hawk’s arrogance and sense of superiority ?  3+3

Ans – The hawk is boastful of the perfection of his limbs. His hooked beak, his sharp talon and even his feathers have been designed meticulously to hunt other animals efficiently. The hawk expresses his wonder at the excellence of his tools of destruction and thinks that for obtaining such perfection the nature has to employ all its power of creativity.

The hawk is surely feeling superior at the perfection of his body and takes pride in thinking that such perfection can be achieved only by a special favour of nature in his creation. So, he thinks himself to be a specially favoured animal.
