Ans Alice is an inquisitive and imaginative little girl. She is the central character of the story, ‘Down the Rabbit-Hole.’ She jumps down the rabbit hole. Many strange incidents happen to her. The hole goes forward like a tunnel for a while. Then it slopes down so fast. Physically Alice falls for a long time. She sees shelves with jars, maps, and books. She picks up one jar of orange marmalade, but it is empty. The fall does not hurt her. Psychologically, Alice feels astonished but not afraid. She is getting braver. She uses imagination. She is curious and starts thinking deeply. Alice thinks she may fall through the earth. She even imagines meeting people who walk upside down. She talks to herself. Her imagination helps her to stay calm in unusual situation. This presents Alice as brave, thoughtful, and full of wonder even in a confusing situation.

(২) What was special about the White Rabbit ? Why did Alice follow the White Rabbit ? 3+3 *****

AnsThe White Rabbit was not like an ordinary rabbit which we see in our environment or in a rabbit hutch. Rather he wears waistcoat, carries a pocket-watch. He can talk exactly like a human being. The most strange feature of the White Rabbit is that he was in a hurry and always seem worried about being late. He leads Alice into the Wonderland.

Alice followed the White Rabbit because for the first time she was looking such a talking rabbit. She was very curious about him. Alice was amazed with his appearance, dressing, behaviour and quicksilver nature. Alice wanted to know where he was going. That is why he followed the White Rabbit down the rabbit-hole to discover something new. Later, she ultimately reaches Wonderland following him. There, she has gone through a number of adventures.

(৩) Describe Alice’s experiences in the hall of locked doors as narrated in ‘Down the Rabbit-Hole’.  ***

Ans In the story ‘Down the Rabbit-Hole’, Alice enters a long hall illuminated by lamps hang from the ceiling. There are many locked doors. The hall is mysterious and quiet. Alice tries to open each door but cannot open any of them. She wonders how she will come out. Alice discovers a small glass table with a golden key on it. She is full of excitement. She tries unlocking all the doors. But she finds none that fits the door. Then she finds a small golden key on a glass table. Alice opens a tiny door behind a curtain. She sees a beautiful garden filled with vibrant flowers and fountains. Now, she is far too big to enter. She is sad but determined. She finds a small bottle on the table. It says ‘Drink Me’ printed on it in large letters. She drinks it and becomes small. Later, she sees a tiny cake ‘Eat Me’ written on it. These events show how Alice thinks, plans, and solves problems in different ways in Wonderland.

() “Dinah’ll miss me very much to-night, I should think!” – What did Alice say about Dinah ? How does her imagination show her childlike nature ?

Ans While falling for a long time, Alice has nothing to do. So she begins talking to herself. She thinks that her pet cat, Dinah may miss her tonight. She hopes someone remembers to give Dinah her milk at tea time. Alice imagines Dinah might try to catch a bat. She even wonders if cats eat bat or vice versa.

This question arises from thoughts of her pet cat, Dinah. All this reflects Alice’s curious and playful mind. Her thoughts are imaginative. Thus, she shows her childish nature and love for Dinah.

(৫) “Oh my ears and whiskers, how late it’s getting!”- Who makes the remark and in what situation ? What does this line tell us about the character of the White Rabbit ? 3+3 ****

Ans The White Rabbit makes the remark. He is in a hurry and looking at his watch. The Rabbit turns a corner and hurries down the passage. Alice hears him saying this. She is surprised to see a rabbit talking and checking the time. The situation seems strange. But Alice finds it quite natural at that moment.

The line presents that the White Rabbit is worried about being late for something important. He is not a normal Rabbit. He has human-like qualities. He can talk, wear a waistcoat, and carry a watch. His unusual nature turns Alice curious. Alice follows him and enters the world of Wonderland.

All this reveals Alice’s brave heart and curious nature. She likes adventures and faces every challenge fearlessly. Alice can find simple solutions to problems. She knows that strange things may happen. She is always ready to accept new experiences. This expresses that Alice has an open mind and a strong desire. She is ready to discover the unknown and strange incidents in Wonderland.

(৭) Bring out the significance of the title of the story ‘Down the Rabbit-Hole’. *****

Ans  Lewis Carroll originally titled his handwritten manuscript ‘Alice’s Adventures Under Ground,’ in 1864. He was inspired by a little girl named Alice Liddell. A year later, he revised the story and retitled it ‘Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland’ in 1865. The first chapter is named ‘Down the Rabbit-Hole’. Alice, an inquisitive little girl and protagonist of the story, chases a white rabbit and plunges into Wonderland. The fall is not just a real fall. It also means entering a strange, new world. In this world, logic and reality are upside down. Carroll uses the rabbit-hole to show a path from the normal world to a world of imgination. Alice finds a place filled with talking animals, magic potions and strange rules. The title ‘Down the Rabbit-Hole’ has both a real and a deeper meaning. Her sister’s book has no pictures or conversations. Suddenly, she sees a White Rabbit with a watch. The Rabbit talks to himself and runs. Alice follows the Rabbit without thinking much. She falls down a deep rabbit-hole. While falling, she stays calm and thinks about many things. She sees strange things on the walls like cupboards and maps. Alice enters a strange and magical world. She finds small door and keys. She sees a bottle with the words “DRINK ME”. She drinks it and becomes very small. Then she eats a cake and grows very big. She is brave, curious and wants to explore. She asks many questions and talks to herself. She is surprised as well as delighted. These adventures help Alice learn more about herself and the world around her.

He plays a significant role in awakening Alice’s adventurous spirit and curious nature. He mutters to himself, checks his watch in a hurry and, looks nervous: “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” This unusual behaviour makes Alice curious. The Rabbit jumps into the rabbit-hole. Alice follows him without much thinking. The rabbit-hole is like a deep well. Alice’s magical journey begins. While falling, Alice keeps thinking about the Rabbit. The rabbit does not speak to Alice. Without him, Alice’s adventure would not begin. Once again, Alice sees the White Rabbit running in a long passage. Alice runs after him as fast as she can. But soon the Rabbit is out of sight. Thus the White Rabbit draws Alice into a world full of wonder and surprise.

She tried again and again desperately. It was too slippery. Alice felt tired and hopeless. The poor Alice sat down on the floor and cried bitterly. Though determined, hopeful, and brave, Alice felt hurt by her failure. Thus, her journey to Wonderland was a mix of magic and struggle.
